Fun activities to do with the Grand-Kids

Did you know the first Sunday in September is grandparents day?

Memories with Grandma and Grandpa are something children will cherish for the rest of their lives. Sometimes, it can be hard to find something fun to do. We’ve put together a list of fun activities for grandparents to share with their grandkids.

Play cards

Who doesn’t like a good game of cards? Card games like UNO, Old Maid or Go Fish are great for any age!

Solve crosswords, puzzles or riddles.

Puzzles are great because they challenge the mind and involve teamwork. There are many books available with some fun brain teasers for all ages.

Interview each other!

Take notes or even record it with your smartphone. Give your grandchild something to look back on by having them interview Grandma or Grandpa! Who knows, you may find out something new yourself.

Draw a family tree, chat about its branches

Most families are a lot bigger than we realize. Sit with the grandkids, draw out a family tree. Get creative and have some fun as you chat about a little family history.

Share stories while looking at old photos

A picture is worth a thousand words, but often times we don’t know the real story behind the photos we see. Why not spend some time showing the grandkids pictures of their mom or dad when they were young and share some fun stories.

Go on a walk

A little sightseeing around your home or a stroll to the park is a great way to spend time with kids. Find a playground and let them show you how well they can hang upside-down.

Have a tea party

Putting on a big fancy hat and doing a little acting is a great way to escape reality and have a little fun. Snack on some cookies and sip “tea” while you gossip about the goings on in high society. Let your imagination go wild.

Take turns reading a book

Whether it’s a bedtime story or a chapter of a favourite book reading is a great way to encourage lifelong reading.

Draw pictures of one another

Break out some coloured pencils and have some fun. You don’t have to be Rembrandt to have a little fun. Draw each other and have a laugh. Drawings are a great keepsake for both the grandchild and grandparent.

Bake cookies

Sharing the secret cookie recipe is a great way to bond with the grandkids and have a little fun in the kitchen —it’s tasty too!

Sing karaoke and dance!

Find out what the grandkids are listening to and learn the song. Imagine how surprised they will be when you start singing and dancing to their favourite song. Also, you can share your favourite song growing up with them. Show them how you used to dance when that song came on. Music is a great way to bond.

Color or paint picture frames

There are many craft ideas you can do with your grandkids. One simple idea is to create something that will always have a special place in your grandchild’s heart by decorating a picture frame together and putting a special picture in it.

Paint and decorate birdhouse

The Dollar store often has pre-made wooden bird houses that can be painted and decorated. Not only are you creating lovely piece of art to place outside on a tree, but you are creating something that you all can cherish as you watch the birds make use of your hard work.

Memories are created every hour of every day! Enjoy making memories with your grandkids.
